Antioxidants and Healthy Aging

The aging process is like water moving downhill toward the sea: it can be a rushing river or a creeping glacier. I vote for creeping glacier!
Antioxidants slow the aging process to a crawl. Remember, death is the only way to halt or stop the aging process. We cannot completely stop aging, nor should we try. Instead, we should try to balance the aging process and slow its progress. Make it a creeping glacier instead of a rushing river. This is the entire concept behind the theory of antioxidants.
Antioxidants and super foods
Each different shape of antioxidant has an affinity for certain types of tissue in your body, like a square peg in a square hole and a round peg in a round hole.
  • Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) contains high levels of substances called catechin polyphenols, known to possess strong antioxidant properties. Green tea is a universal antioxidant that promotes the health of practically all tissues. It is the cornerstone of any antioxidant protection program.
  • Peruvian Purple Corn (Zea mays) is grown in the highlands that serve as the headwaters for the Amazon River. Indeed, the biomass from these highlands is responsible for enriching the diversity of the plant life in the Amazon Basin. Anthocyanins in Peruvian Purple Corn are the phytochemicals responsible for the purple pigment. Anthocyanins protect body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation.
  • Bilberry fruit (Vaccinium myrtillus) is the European variety of blueberry. It contains anthocyanosides similar to the anthocyanins in Peruvian Purple Corn. These anthocyanosides may benefit the retina, as well as strengthen the walls of blood vessels, reduce inflammation and stabilize tissues containing collagen (such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage).
  • Blueberry fruit (Vaccinium corymbosum) is one of the few superfruits native to North America. After many years of research on blueberry antioxidants and their potential benefits for the nervous system and for brain health, there is exciting new evidence that blueberries can improve memory and other cognitive problems frequently associated with aging.
  • Schizandra berry (Schizandra chinensis) has long been used in the traditional medicines of Russia and China for a wide variety of respiratory ailments and kidney problems. Hunters and athletes have used schizandra to increase endurance and combat fatigue under physical stress.
  • Red raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus) contains rare antioxidants that promote scavenger activity by liver cells as well as enzymes from the pancreas and even fat cells. Red raspberry leaf increases glutathione levels; glutathione has been called the “mother of all antioxidants.”
  • Ginkgo biloba is effective for memory and mental function in seniors both with and without severe memory loss. Ginkgo may also be helpful for enhancing memory or alertness in younger people.
  • Pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum) is used in the traditional medicine of different Asian cultures as a "blood tonic" and anti-inflammatory. Moreover, the focus of benefits from the pomegranate fruit is the immune system as it was found to possess immunomodulatory properties.
  • Camu camu (Myrciaria dubiais a superfruit antioxidant from the Amazon Basin. As the fruit approaches maturity it develops the highest level of Vitamin C in any plant. Mature fruit also contains heart- and brain-specific cyanins bound to protein in a unique and potent delivery system.
  • Maqui fruit (Aristotelia chilensis) is a superfruit berry from Chile, South America. An overwhelming body of research has now firmly established that the dietary intake of berry fruits has a positive and profound impact on human health, performance and disease. Maqui appears to have the highest antioxidant content of any fruit in the world, with a special affinity for the heart and circulatory system.
