This month's book of the month takes an all-new take on "selling."
In To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth about Moving Others, author Daniel H. Pink explains that in today's high-tech and fast-paced world, the key is to tap in to what most humans do—which is to"convince someone to part with resources" or to"move forward" in some way.
Pink says that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, one in nine Americans works in sales. This means more than 15 million people earn their living by persuading others to purchase their goods or products.
However, Pink says, the other eight out of nine are, in some way, in sales as well. He says all of us are linked to the process of "non-sales selling" or in needing to move others in some way.
"Whether we're employees pitching colleagues on a new idea, entrepreneurs enticing funders to invest, or parents and teachers cajoling children to study, we spend our days trying to move others. Like it or not, we're all in sales now," Pink says.
He goes on to share ways in which the old sales techniques are no longer effective.
He says the "ABC" approach of "Always Be Closing"needs to be replaced with what he calls a new set of "ABCs," atunement, buoyancy and connection.
Attunement is taking the time to tune in to others, to see where THEY are coming from, rather than what you want from them.
Buoyancy refers to being optimistic and positive in your approach, while having a passion for what you are selling.
Connection, Pink says, is finding ways to reach out to your customers in whatever situations they may be and in ways that will truly reach them.
He says in the area of health and education, which applies to us, as AwarenessLife distributors, there is an opportunity to move people "for long distances and long term."
This requires education, pointing people in the right direction and helping them find initial success.
